Miles didn’t remember exactly when Denver had started feeling like a second office, but the city had shuffled into his calendar the way recurring meetings do—first with novelty, then with necessity. His flight always descended the same way, skimming the sprawl, banking toward the mountains that sat like folded paper beyond the city’s clean angles. He’d stare out at those jagged silhouettes and think, not for the first time, that some other version of himself—one with more fleece than email—probably lived out there and came home with wind-burned cheeks and easy sleep.

But Miles worked for Guild Mortgage, and in this version of his life, he landed on a Wednesday afternoon with a laptop full of pipeline projections, a schedule of branch visits, and a tidy plan built around carpeted conference rooms and the ritual of coffee in paper cups. He had brought one bag: a gray Travis Mathew Lateral Convertible Backpack he’d justified to himself as “versatile.” It had swallowed itinerary printouts, a polished pair of dress shoes, a pouch for chargers, even a metal water bottle he rarely used on work trips. The bag seemed to promise competence; everything in its place, everything ready.

He checked into the hotel—a stack of glass and steel shaped like a spreadsheet—then walked the late sun out of his legs along 16th Street, letting the city’s air rinse his head. It smelled faintly of rain and hot pavement, not quite mountain crisp but fresher than the recycled capsules he’d been in all day. That night he ironed a shirt, laid out his blazer, and repacked the bag for the morning: laptop in the padded sleeve, presentation clicker in the top pocket, business cards front zip. His phone, face down on the bed, buzzed once, then again, then a third time that felt urgent.

A friend from college, Claire—the sort who did sunrise runs and knew the difference between clouds and “weather”—had sent a message in a group thread that mostly served to plan reunions that never happened. “Hey, long shot,” she wrote. “I have a line on a permit for a trail tomorrow—one of those unicorn permits you need to reserve months ahead. Our third dropped out last minute. If ANYONE can be in Denver by 6am, the spot is yours.”

Miles read it twice before the edges of the words sharpened. There was a pinned image in the thread from years ago, the same trail: an emerald pool set like a jewel in a bowl of stone, a waterfall that seemed to emerge from a seam in the cliff, air so clear you could count bubbles in the water. “Permit-only,” he murmured, a phrase with the gravity of invitation and challenge. He checked the timestamp. The trailhead was two hours away. He was already in Denver.

His first thought was practical: tomorrow’s agenda, the branch walkthroughs, the deck he was due to present after lunch. He could move the walkthrough, he reasoned. He could present virtually if he had to. But the permit. The permit felt like a door that would swing open for a handful of hours and then close for who knew how long. He tried on the idea of saying no and felt it pinch. You don’t know when you’ll be back, a voice said, and it sounded a lot like the mountains outside his window.

He texted Claire: “I’m here. I can make it.”

He stood in the quiet room and looked down at his bag, the neat outline of an office day. “You’re going to earn your ‘convertible’ label,” he told it, and set to work. The laptop came out, along with the charger brick and a tangle of cables. He stacked them on the desk like they belonged to someone else. Out came the folder of handouts, the dress shoes, the small zipper pouch of pens he knew he wouldn’t need on a trail. The bag deflated into something lighter, leaner. He rethought each pocket. In the main compartment he packed a light shell, a fleece, and the water bottle now upgraded from accessory to necessity. Into the slim front pocket he slipped sunscreen, a small first-aid kit, and the emergency granola bar that had survived three trips and as many hotel minibars. The top pocket swallowed a headlamp—because people who do permit trails always seem to start or end in the dark—and his phone’s battery pack. He clipped his sunglasses to the side strap, threaded a bandanna through a lash point, then cinched the chest strap across the front as if the bag was already on his back.

He slept like someone who had made a decision and woke at 4:30 with the kind of alertness usually reserved for catching flights. He left his work life in neat stacks on the desk, wrote a quick note to himself—“present from room, push walkthrough to Friday”—and stepped into the quiet hallway. The elevator hummed. Outside, the city felt paused, as if holding its breath for the day. He slid into the back seat of Claire’s car with a nod to her partner, Marco, who had the lean calm of people who trust their legs. “You ready?” Claire asked, scrubbing sleep from her face and handing back a bag of trail mix. “I’ve been ready since 9:07 p.m.,” Miles said. It felt like a joke and a confession.

The highway unspooled in the dark. They climbed. Dawn softened the edges of everything, the sky rinsing from graphite to blue. The mountains gathered around them, closer and more complicated than they’d looked from the window of a plane. They reached the trailhead as the sun slipped a first warm finger over the ridgeline. A ranger checked their permits with a practiced smile that somehow made it feel like they were being let in on a secret. “Pack it in, pack it out,” she recited gently, then added, “It’s a good day up there.”word and I’ll generate it.

The trail rose from the parking area like a story someone else had started and you’d been invited to finish. Forest first, damp and green, then a section of slickrock that tilted up toward a bright seam of sky. Miles fell into a rhythm he’d almost forgotten his body knew: step, breath, look; step, breath, look. He tightened the chest strap on the backpack and appreciated how it hugged rather than hung. The shoulder straps didn’t bite, and the small of his back stayed dry where other bags had left him sweating. The top pocket swallowed his phone but released it one-handed when he wanted to check the map. The water bottle slid out and back in with a satisfying, frictionless logic, like the bag had made room for a version of him that hiked more often than he did.

They reached a narrowing where the trail braided into roots and stones. Claire pointed out a plant with tiny bells that smelled faintly of lemon if you crushed the leaves. Marco noticed a hawk scribbling circles in the air above a meadow. Miles felt his breath pull clean and deep. He thought of the emails scheduled to send later and felt no urgency, only a gentle tug at the corner of his mouth, the smile of permission.

Halfway up, the trail steepened, the kind of steep that makes you talk less and pay attention to your feet. He could hear water now, not see it, just the promise of it. The last bit was a scramble along a narrow ledge with a chain drilled into the rock—safe enough, thrilling enough. When they crested the final rise, the world opened and the sound of the falls became a body-felt thing. The lake lay there, impossible and completely itself, green beyond the crayon box, clear enough to make distance feel like a trick of the eye. Logs older than calendars lay submerged like runes. The waterfall ribboned the cliff, whispering across the lake’s surface in threads of white.

No one spoke for a while. The group of hikers who’d started before them stood scattered along the shore, each wearing a version of the same face. “I get it,” Miles said finally. “Yeah,” Claire said. “You get it.”

He knelt and set the backpack down at his feet. It landed with a soft thud and a small puff of trail dust. The gray fabric looked different here—earned, he thought—scuffed a little at the corners, faint stripes of dirt across the base. He brushed it with his hand but left the dust in the seams. He’d brought this bag to hold a day at work. Now it was holding something else entirely.

They found a spot on a flat chunk of rock and shared the kind of breakfast that always tastes better above 10,000 feet: cold coffee, apples that snapped, a bag of salted almonds. The lake made a mirror of the sky, and the sun muscled up over the rim of the cliff, warming the back of Miles’s neck. He took the bandanna from the lash point and dipped it in the water, wrung it, and laid it across his face, catching his breath in citrus and stone. He hadn’t planned for this day, and yet he had, in some way, simply by carrying a bag that could be more than one thing.

“You’re going to take the dorky selfie, right?” Claire asked, grinning. “With the bag in the frame. Proof of life. Proof of good decisions.”

Miles laughed. “It must be documented,” he said, adopting the solemn tone of corporate memos. He stood, propped the backpack by his boots so the logo and the trail dirt both showed, and angled his phone so the lake and the falls lined up over his shoulder. He could see the three of them in the corner of the screen—their shapes small in a big place—and beyond them, the cliff, the water, the light. He smiled without thinking about it, the way a person smiles when something inside finally matches the view outside. Click.

They wandered the shore and read the signs about delicate ecosystems, about staying on the path, about the slow violence of too many footprints. Miles felt the place teach him the kind of attention he was usually too busy to give. On the way down, they passed hikers working in the opposite direction, faces polished with effort and hope. “How much farther?” one asked, and Miles, holding onto the old ritual, said, “You’re close,” and meant it, because close felt like an attitude as much as a distance.

Back at the car, he shook the grit from his shoes and considered for a reckless second not checking his email at all. He checked anyway, and the world had not ended. A teammate had covered a call, a client had moved a meeting, the branch walkthrough was rescheduled to Friday with a three-sentence apology. He typed a brief note from the passenger seat—“Quick change of plans. Friday works, and I’ll present virtually today from the hotel”—and caught his own reflection in the dark screen when he paused. In the reflection, there was a man whose shoulders sat a little lower than usual. There was trail dust on his cheek he hadn’t noticed.

They drove back into Denver under a sky that had decided to be generous all day. In the hotel, he set the backpack on the chair and looked at it with the kind of affection usually reserved for old friends. He emptied it methodically. Pine needles pinged the table. The bandanna smelled like lake and sun. He wiped the trail dust from the bag with a damp towel, then stopped and left a faint stripe in the corner, the way kids save wristbands after concerts. A reminder you can touch.

The afternoon’s presentation went fine—better than fine, in that the questions were sharper and his answers more patient. He felt less like a man making a case and more like a person offering a path through numbers. Afterward, a teammate pinged him—“Sounded great. Everything okay this morning?”—and he considered telling the whole story, the permit, the cliff, the hush around the lake. Instead he typed, “All good. Took care of something I might not get another chance to do.”

That night he walked the same strip of city he’d walked the day before, but now the buildings felt like gentle giants and the air tasted like a lane between trees. He called his dad and left a voicemail that was mostly a description of water. He texted Claire the selfie, the bag at his feet, the grin that made his face look a little younger. She replied with a string of mountain emojis and a single sentence: “You made the right kind of time.”

Back in his room, he repacked the bag for the next morning’s flight, and it felt like choosing not just what to take but how to move. The laptop slid in, the charger coiled, the clicker returned to its pocket. The bandanna went in last, still damp at one corner. He buckled the chest strap across the front and let it hang, a small emblem of what the bag could do and what he could do when he remembered to step through doors that opened only sometimes.

Miles slept with the window cracked. In the morning, he would rise, and the city would be a spreadsheet again, and then an airport, and then whatever came next. But something had quietly shifted into place: a different template, an alternate format for a day. He had a photograph that held the proof, and a bag with a faint smear of Colorado on it that did, too. He didn’t know when he’d be back, but now he knew how to make room when a permit appeared like a small miracle in the inbox of his life. And he knew—because the backpack had shown him—that sometimes the tools you bring to do your job can be the same tools that let you be a person in the world, which is, after all, the job that matters most.

If you’d like, I can also create the selfie image you described (landscape wide, studio quality: man smiling at a summit view with the TravisMathew Lateral Convertible Backpack at his feet, trail dust visible). Just say the
